Crawley – new town/old village
Despite the growth of the new town from 1947 - the only one south of London - Crawley retains its village centre and appearance as a major coaching stop en route to Brighton.
The George Hotel has 15th century timbers, while the 14th-15th century parish church has a massive tower, a wooden Jacobean pulpit and beautiful oak roof.
The church at nearby Ifield has had its timber porch for over 600 years. A little to the east, Worth is a reminder of heavily-wooded Sussex. The visitor is transported back to Saxon England, with one of the largest and best churches of its era remaining in the country. The impressive interior of arches and nave windows remains much as the Saxons left them. Rather later are the wooden pulpit with its carved heads and figures - and the altar rails, also bedecked with superb carvings. |
